Iran, the country from which a fatwa against author Salman Rushdie was announced, says the author is worthy of "reproach and condemnation" but denies it was involved.

An Iranian government official has denied Tehran was involved in the assault on author Salman Rushdie, in remarks that were the country's first public comments on the attack.
